A Frosty Start

Easy run along railway path as legs were still a bit stiff from Saturday . Very cold at first but was fine after 10-15 mins . The above photo is from 1985 our second attempt at the West highland Way.

Blog History

This blog was started as I decided to enter the Highland Fling Race in 2010. Having ran since I was 11 years old the last 10 years or so have left me with no desire to race or train to race over the usual distances . I decided to have a go at a ultra race and the Fling attracted me as I have not ran on the WHW for many a year but have lots of good memories of when we used to run the way in a relay.

The first time I was on the whw was in 1983 when myself , my brother Alex ( who has also entered the fling this year),Adrian Callan (sadly no longer with us) , Dr Tom Gillespie, Danny Wilmoth ( future brother -in - law) and Mark Kerr all clubmates from Springburn Harriers decided to walk and camp up to Fort William for the Highland Games. A great time was had by all but we were as green as the grass and later on I will mention some of the crimes but not any names from that summers expedition. I planned a relay the following year for club funds after our initial adventure . We ran the WHW in 1984 and the crimes got worse as the adults joined us .Over the next few years we got our time down to 12hrs 55 mins ( we ran from Bishopbriggs sports centre to give us 100 miles ). I have ran all of the whw apart from the last 15 miles .

I never started the Fling in 2010 as I slipped and injured my knee in December. I only started to run again mid August as I was in to much pain prior to that. So no plans at this moment but I would still like to make the start line sometime in the future.
